Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church

1627 Monument Avenue

In 1923, the Tudor style Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church was built at 1627 Monument Avenue and had the largest Presbyterian membership in Virginia at the time, having combined congregations from the former Church of the Covenant and Grace Street Presbyterian. The church’s most distinguished member was Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr., whose funeral was held at the church and was attended by every member of the U.S. Supreme Court at the time, including Chief Justice William Rehnquist.
